MAP-A UPDATES

By Dr. Bob Couldry

October 12, 2009

DESE has updated language in the MAP-A Manual for 2009-2010. On page 15 of the manual, additional language has been added to clarify the importance of individualizing the MAP-A portfolio. The new text reads “Student Work Records should demonstrate the application of the APIs along with differentiated instruction showing individual student results in a standards-based activity.” Remember the APIs and activities chosen for MAP-A should be aligned with the student’s IEP.
The RPDCs have scheduled a series of MAP-A trainings this fall. We encourage each district to send representatives, new or experienced teachers, who administer the MAP-A. It is also beneficial for administrators who participate in the MAP-A, including those that sign the ”Validation Form,” to attend this training as well. Contact your RPDC for more information on training dates and times.
The Division of Special Education has developed a new resource document (1 page) providing definitions for accommodations, modifications and interventions. The document also provides a short list of examples of each. The document can be found at: http://www.dese.mo.gov/divspeced/Compliance/Q&A/documents/AccModInt.pdf
